France requests EU surveil South Korean imports

One of the French government's listed initiatives for aiding its ailing automotive sector, especially Peugeot, was asking the European Commission to keep an eye on imports from South Korea. The EU signed a free-trade agreement with South Korea last year, and France is concerned that might be exaggerating the loss of market share being suffered by its domestic makers – Europe-wide sales of South Korean cars rose by more than 20 percent last year in a market that is enduring painful contraction.

The EU says it has received an official request to monitor South Korean imports, according to a report inReuters. Should the EU agree to the France's demand, it could mean instating "prior surveillance measures" that would compel the South Koreans to notify the EU of the number and type of products it planned to ship in advance.

No one is mentioning the reintroduction of tarrifs on South Korean automobiles, since even the EU Trade Commissioner is talking up the overall benefits of the free-trade agreement, but it is an option. The effect such a move would have on the French domestics' s situation is questionable, though; Hyundai's EU plants, such as those in the Czech Republic and Turkey, have produced 70 percent of its products registered in the EU, and Kia Motors Slovakia plant produces the duty-free and very popular Cee'd on top of the Sportage and Hyundai ix35. A Hyundai spokesman said just 12 percent of its EU product came from its home country.

Kia misses profit estimates, blames marketing costs, strikes

Bloomberg reports Kia has missed analyst profit estimates for the second quarter after net income slipped to $965 million at current conversion rates. On average, analysts estimated the South Korean automaker would bring in somewhere around $1.1 billion, though Kia did see its revenue increase by 8.4 percent. The automaker said its less-than-estimated profit results came down to increased spending as the company strove to market its new Pride subcompact and K9 luxury sedan (a model that will be known as Quoris in other markets). Kia also saw its operating profit increase by 18 percent, falling just shy of industry estimates. But additional marketing wasn't solely to blame for the missed goals.

The report also indicates recent strikes by workers vying for better pay and reduced hours may have had an impact on the bottom line as well. All told, Kia estimates the company lost production of 5,450 units worth somewhere around $82.5 million during strikes held on July 13 and 20.

The news isn't all dark and stormy, however. Kia sales in China blossomed by around 18 percent, and Europe saw an even bigger increase of around 25 percent thanks largely to the introduction of the Pride. Europe saw its industry-wide sales slacken by 3.2 percent by comparison.

2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee passes German "moose test"

Chrysler has released a press release detailing the findings of a recent 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee "moose test" by the German magazine Auto Motor und Sport. The publication ran the Grand Cherokee through conditions supposedly identical to those in a test conducted by the Swedish magazine Teknikens Varld, which saw the SUV nearly roll over after an abrupt lane change. After AMS loaded the Jeep with a varying number of passengers and the maximum amount of cargo, it said the vehicle remained stable with all four wheels on the ground during abrupt maneuvers.

As you may recall, Teknikens Varld produced a video showing the Grand Cherokee lift up onto two wheels during a simulated emergency lane change. Chrysler responded by saying the Jeep was intentionally overloaded and even sent a team of engineers to reproduce the test with the Swedish magazine. Take a look at the press release posted below for more information, including a translation of the text from Auto Motor und Sport.

Jeep Grand Cherokee Passes "Moose Test" Performed by Germany's Auto Motor und Sport

July 27, 2012 , Auburn Hills, Mich. -

An evaluation of the 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee by Germany-based magazine Auto, Motor und Sport (AMS) found the vehicle – including its advanced safety systems – performed successfully and as designed. The Grand Cherokee completed multiple repetitions of an evasive maneuver sometimes known as the "moose test" or "elk test." The maneuver was performed by an AMS driver at an automotive test site in Germany that is sanctioned by the Allgemeiner Deutscher Automobil-Club (ADAC). Course dimensions and layout, checked and approved by AMS, were those set out by the International Standards Organization (ISO). The result reaffirms the Grand Cherokee's place among the safest vehicles on the road today, evidenced by its listing as a "Top Safety Pick" by the U.S. Insurance Institute for Highway Safety – one of the honors that made it the most awarded SUV ever.

English Translation of Auto Motor und Sport story:

Jeep Grand Cherokee passes the moose test; Jeep does not roll over

The new Jeep Grand Cherokee does not roll over even at high speed, with sharp steering maneuvers, maximum passengers and fully loaded. During the Auto Motor und Sport moose test, the vehicle remained safely on the road and none of the four wheels lost contact with the road.

With this, Auto Motor und Sport puts into perspective the results of the Swedish magazine, Teknikens Varld, that alleged a danger of the SUV tipping during fast direction change towards the last of the three pylon lanes.

Even though the Jeep Grand Cherokee had already passed the first test performed by Auto Motor und Sport, including an avoidance test with releasing the accelerator pedal provoking a load shift, the test was repeated once more by auto motor und sport after the result in Sweden.

Under standardized conditions for road surface and with pylon lanes set depending on vehicle width in accordance to the guidelines determined by the VDA (Verband der Deutschen Automobilindustrie; German Automotive Manufacturer Association), the Jeep remained safely on the road during the magazine's test.

Whether loaded with 2 people on board or with the maximum permissible total weight, all four wheels maintained contact with the ground to the greatest possible extent. The tested Jeep did not demonstrate one-sided uplift or, let alone, tipping. This confirms the theory that the Cherokee in Sweden was overloaded.

Watch a Jeep Grand Cherokee fail Sweden's Moose Test *UPDATE

The Jeep Grand Cherokee has proven to be a rock-solid off-road-capable SUV with a dose of civility on public roads. But while the top Jeep has a terrific reputation and a long list of accolades, at least one model apparently didn't have the chops for the Teknikens Moose (or Elk) test over in Sweden.

The moose test is a lighting-fast emergency lane change maneuver that takes place at a relatively staid 40 miles per hour. While most vehicles clear the obstacle with little fuss, the below video shows that a Grand Cherokee Overland got up on two wheels and very nearly rolled. Teknikens Värld tester Linus Pröjtz points out in the Overland model comes standard in Sweden with 20-inch wheels, rollover protection and electronic stability control.

The Swedish car magazine (translation: "World of Technology") goes on to call on Chrysler to put a stop sale on the Grand Cherokee in Sweden until this issue is addressed, and they claim Chrysler has yet to provide an explanation as to why the vehicle performed so poorly.

Here in the States, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration awarded the Grand Cherokee four stars, including a five-star score for side impacts. However, in rating the SUV's rollover resistance, the GC only managed three stars in rear-wheel drive configuration, while four-wheel drive models netted four stars.

Grand Cherokee Statement for Teknikens Varld Test

Chrysler Group engineers are investigating a Swedish magazine's evaluation of the 2012 Grand
Cherokee. During the evaluation, the publication was able to capture images of a Grand Cherokee on two wheels as it performed an extreme maneuver in an overloaded condition.

Advised of this event by the magazine, Chrysler Group engineers made numerous attempts to
reproduce the wheel-lift in a properly loaded vehicle. Extensive testing produced no such result.
A subsequent evaluation was conducted by the magazine July 8 in Sweden and witnessed by Chrysler Group engineers. Three vehicles performed 11 runs on a course prepared by the magazine. None reproduced the original event.

The uncharacteristic result was obtained using a vehicle loaded beyond its weight specifications. The Grand Cherokee's weight limitations are clearly stated on the vehicle and in the owner's manual. Also, the extreme maneuver performed by the magazine is not certified by any regulatory agency, nor is it used to establish any sanctioned safety ratings.
Chrysler Group takes seriously any safety concerns and engineers are examining the event to better understand the magazine's claims.

A "Top Safety Pick" of the U.S. Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, the 2012 Grand Cherokee is an award-winning SUV that features Electronic Stability Control and Electronic Roll Mitigation as
standard equipment. It meets or exceeds all government safety mandates and its outstanding
performance has made it the most awarded SUV in history.

Jeep Wrangler Freedom Edition arrives in time for 4th of July

The iconic Jeep Wrangler's earliest ancestors were military vehicles that proved their offroad capabilities by shuttling our armed forces through some of the world's most difficult terrain.

Now, 70 years later, that bare-bones, utilitarian vehicle is all grown up and (somewhat) civilized, but no less American. To show off its patriotism, Jeep has just announced a new Freedom package on its 2012 Wrangler and Wrangler Unlimited models.

Spotting the new trim packages on the street should be super easy. First, they're only available in three colors: Deep Cherry Red, Bright White and, exclusive to Freedom models, True Blue.

Each Freedom Edition Wrangler receives a military-style star on the hood and rear quarter panels as well as "Oscar Mike" fender badges and "Oscar Mike" stitched in silver on the seats' black, tectonic fabric. "Oscar Mike" is military slang for "On the Move." Silver stitching accents the leather steering wheel, door fabric, seats, grab handle, door pulls and dash vent rings.

Outside are 17-inch Mineral Gray alloys with grille and bumper inserts in matching gray.

Part of the Wrangler Freedom Edition's $28,165 purchase price and the Wrangler Unlimited Freedom's $30,670 goes to charities to benefit America's veterans.

"It is with both pride in our history and gratitude to all those who have served that we have chosen to donate $250 from each Jeep Wrangler Freedom Edition to be divided between these important charitable organizations that benefit current and returning military members," says Mike Manley, President and CEO of the Jeep brand.

Jeep Wrangler sales up 34 percent in 2012 with all-time record in May

June 29, 2012 , Auburn Hills, Mich. - More than 70 years ago, the U.S. government informed automakers that it was looking for a "light reconnaissance vehicle" for military use. Willys-Overland quickly created the Willys Quad – which became the Willys MA and MB – but the Army, and the world, came to know the vehicle that would help win a world war as the Jeep®.

As a tribute to U.S. military members past and present, the Jeep brand has created the new 2012 Jeep Wrangler Freedom edition. Available in red, white or blue, the new Jeep Wrangler Freedom edition features a military-inspired star decal on the hood and rear quarter panels, along with an "Oscar Mike" (military jargon for "on the move") fender badge.

Jeep will donate $250 from each Wrangler Freedom Edition it sells to charities that benefit U.S. military members. The new Jeep Wrangler Freedom Edition is created in honor of Jeep's one-of-a-kind history, and as a tribute to all of the brave men and women who have and continue to serve in the U.S. military.

"It is with both pride in our history and gratitude to all those who have served that we have chosen to donate $250 from each Jeep Wrangler Freedom Edition to be divided between these important charitable organizations that benefit current and returning military members," Manley added.

Chrysler Group LLC also offers a $500 cash allowance to military members that may be applied toward the retail purchase or lease of an eligible Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge, Ram Truck or FIAT vehicle. Chrysler adding jobs at Toledo Jeep plant to boost Wrangler production

New car sales have been on the upswing, and few vehicles have experienced more success than the Jeep Wrangler. The iconic off-roader set an all-time May sales record with 14,454 units sold, and its total sales are up 34 percent on the year.

That's good news for Chrysler, and it could lead to more high-wage manufacturing jobs in northern Ohio.Automotive News reports that Team Pentastar plans to add an unspecified number of jobs to its Toledo Jeep plant in the fourth quarter of 2012. The move should help Chrysler satiate demand for the perpetually hot Wrangler and Wrangler Unlimited, and it could help international sales, as well. CEO Sergio Marchionne is on record saying that he'd like the Wrangler to spur Jeep sales across the pond.

That said, there is a chance that this decision won't lead to many new hires in the near term. The Toledo, Ohio complex also builds the Jeep Liberty until August, when the plant will receive a makeover that will result in an additional 300,000 square feet of production space. It seems likely that the Wrangler jobs could come from the neighboring plant (the whole complex uses two facilities), but when production picks up at the renovated building, new jobs would have to be added. Chrysler has previously announced that up to 1,100 new positions will be available at the complex by the end of 2013.

Jeep Grand Cherokee to have short 2013 model year ahead of major updates

Jeep is planning an upgraded Grand Cherokee for the 2014 model year, and since the automaker is anxious to get the freshened model out to customers, the popular sport utility will have a shortened 2013 model year. According to Automotive News, dealers are just now ordering the 2013 models, and they are scheduled to start production in August.

The biggest change for 2014 will be the availability of a 3.0-liter diesel V6, which we previewed just over one year ago. In the European Grand Cherokee, this engine produces 241 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque – seriously good power numbers for Jeep's stalwart utility vehicle.

Additionally, Automotive News reports that a ZF-sourced eight-speed automatic is on deck for 2014. Details are scarce right now, but this transmission will likely be paired with the 3.6-liter Pentastar V6, just like in the2013 Ram 1500 and the current Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger.

The 2014 Grand Cherokee is slated to debut in January, likely at the Detroit Auto Show, with sales to start shortly thereafter.
